Hatch sat down with Ollie, Revenue and Partnerships Manager at Fishburners to learn more about his story and why he uses Hatch to find work!

Can you tell us more about your role at Fishburners?

Ollie: I work for Fishburners, Australia’s largest community of startups as the Revenue and Partnerships Manager. My role involves building relationships and growing Fishburners’ portfolio of ecosystem partners to drive revenue for our business model. I wouldn’t have attained this role without Hatch.

What has your career journey looked like so far?

Ollie: Originally, I was set on becoming a human rights lawyer, aiming to do something I considered truly noble. However, as I grew older, my hearing deteriorated quite significantly. I quite clearly remember back in high school, feeling utterly lost when teachers asked me questions. It wasn't until I received a cochlear implant that I experienced a real turning point; it was life-changing in my everyday interactions.

That's when I truly appreciated the incredible impact of technology, sparking a desire to delve into this field. Midway through my law degree, I leaped into the startup world and launched my own social media consultancy. This venture was just the beginning. I eventually moved into software sales, climbing the ladder from a Sales Development Rep to an Account Manager, and then to an Account Executive. And now, here I am in my current role, excited to see where this journey takes me next.

What is your biggest superpower that's hard to capture in a resume?

Ollie: I believe hiring managers and recruiters are looking for people who are not only capable but also earnest and easy to work with. These are the strengths I bring to a team, and they mirror the core values I seek in one. I can strike up a conversation with anyone, finding some common ground with everyone I meet. Empathy and communication are essential, and they are skills that are difficult to demonstrate on a resume.

What role has Hatch played in your career?

Ollie: I believe the standout benefit of using Hatch as a platform lies in its ability to help candidates clearly define their goals and values. It also guides them on how to optimise and present their experiences in ways that resonate with hiring managers. Unlike the often vague traditional resume and cover letter, Hatch gets specific, asking pointed questions about your working style and motivations. This not only streamlines the application process but also provides valuable feedback along the way.

What has been the biggest learning curve in your early career?

Ollie: Understanding the differences in the contexts you work in. For example, corporate environments are very frameworks and process-driven, whereas startups have no established rulebook or process. So there are fewer expectations in startups, but higher risks, which also come with greater impact.

What advice would you give to others seeking employment opportunities?

Ollie:

  1. After applying for a position, it's crucial to follow up with the hiring manager via LinkedIn or email. Given that they may be reviewing hundreds of applicants, finding small but meaningful ways to stand out is essential.
  2. If you face rejection, always seek feedback and inquire about the reasons you weren't selected.
  3. During interviews, ensure you ask if the interviewer has any reservations about your application. This proactive approach not only demonstrates your eagerness to improve but also gives you a chance to address any potential concerns right there and then, guide your next steps in the process.
